Backup Power for Home Phone Services During Power Outages:
If your residential voice telephone service is provided using fiber-optics or voice over internet protocol (VoIP) rather than the traditional copper-based line, this service requires backup battery power to continue functioning during an outage. To avoid a disruption of home voice service during an outage – and to maintain the ability to connect to 911 emergency services – you will need an external backup battery installed to power your Optical Network Terminal, or ONT.
Please note: voice services provided over our copper network are line-powered, so they do not require a backup battery. If you are unsure if you’re phone service is copper or fiber, please call us at (918) 366-8000.
How long will a battery power my home phone?
The backup battery system that powers the fiber ONTs provided by BTC Broadband allow you to continue to use your home voice services during a power outage for up to 8 hours of talk time. Without a backup battery or alternate backup source such as a generator, customers with fiber optics or voice over internet protocol based residential telephone service will not be able to make any calls, including emergency calls to 911. If you require a backup battery with a longer standby and talk time, please contact us at (918) 366-8000.
Will my battery power other services?
Our backup battery does not provide power to any services other than our voice service — home security systems, medical monitoring devices, and other equipment will not run on a home phone backup battery.
What are my options for buying a backup battery?
We offer battery backup options with up to a 24-hour standby time. If you are interested in purchasing additional backup power for your fiber-optics or VoIP residential telephone service, please contact us at (918) 366-8000 to discuss available options.
How do I install a backup battery?
Your backup battery should come with installation instructions for you to follow. If you are not comfortable installing the battery yourself, contact us at (918) 366-8000 and we can help.
How do I care for and store my battery?
Please follow the more detailed instructions included with your battery for proper use, storage and care of your battery to ensure that it will function as needed during a power outage. If you do not store your battery correctly, it may shorten its useful life. Environmental factors such as temperature can shorten your battery’s useful life. You may also monitor and test your backup battery yourself. If you choose to disconnect your battery from its housing unit and test it yourself, please use caution and be sure to reattach all connections correctly and securely.
We strongly recommend contacting us before self-testing your backup battery in any way. We can assist you with accessing the manufacturer instructions for the specific model of power supply and battery used at your location.
Who is responsible for repairing or replacing the battery?
If you buy a battery, you will own the battery and will be responsible for the costs of repairing it or replacing.
