Web Space Setup

You’ve seen the other users’ home pages and now you want to know how to go about writing your own. Here’s the process of how to publish your OLP homepage:

    1. Write the actual HTML document. (Don’t worry, it’s not as hard as it sounds.)

    2. Transfer it to your personal directory on the OLP web server using FTP.

Here’s an in-depth description of each step:

    1. Write the HTML file

HTML stands for Hypertext Markup Language. HTML files are simple ASCII files, much like old-time word processor files with “embedded” codes.

Once you understand a little about HTML, you’ll find that, although you can create a home page with a simple text editor such as Notepad, using an HTML design application, such as FrontPage or 1-4-All will make the task much easier.

TIP—You can examine the HTML source code for any web page by choosing View/Page Source from the browser menu. This allows you to see how any Web page was created. This is a great way for the novice ‘Web page designer’ to get a feel for HTML and learn some of the secrets the pros use. You can test your HTML file by using your browser. Simply type in the Full Path of your html document into the Address Bar at the top of your browser. For example, C: empindex.html

    2.  Put the file(s) in your WWW directory on our server

By far, the easiest way to do this is to use a FTP (File Transfer Protocol) program, such as WS-FTP, included with your OLP software. Since we know that you have WS-FTP, we’ll explain how to use that to upload your files. However, you can use any ftp program that you want if you have another preference.

When you first start WS-FTP, the Session Profile screen appears.

      1.  Choose Online Plus as your Profile and make sure the Anonymous box is NOT checked. The host name area should be ftp.olp.net

      2.  In the USER ID field, put your OLP user name (NOT your email address).

      3.  In the PASSWORD field, put your OLP password. Asterisks (*) will echo onscreen when you type your password.

      4.  At the bottom of the Session Profile screen, under Initial Directories/Remote Host, type / (forward Slash).

      5.  Click OK. After a few seconds, you’ll be connected to your personal directory on our web server.

WS-FTP has a split screen interface with the left side showing your local directory (your computer) and the right side showing your personal directory (on the OLP server). Navigate your way around your local directories until you see your. html files, images, and any other files you want to upload (to move from your home computer to your personal directory). Simply double click the files and they’ll be transferred to the OLP server.
